My boyfriend bought me an expensive gift but I don't really like it. Actually, I don't like it at all. On the one hand, I don't want to hurt his feelings by telling him, on the other hand I don't want to receive this kind of gift again in the future.

I want there to be honesty in our relationship, too. How should I handle this?

YOUR BOYFRIEND: I saved up for an entire year to get you this... a rare collectible coin. It's from the ancient civilization of the Incaroopas who existed in the 4th century in the science fiction world of Gaxxar. Notice the beauty of the 3 headed alien on the front of the coin and the flip side contains the phrase, "Aghakhgaghghaghgghghagh Ramamahahakakakkakah Soup." When translated to English means, "I love soup."

YOUR BOYFRIEND: Isn't it great?!!!

YOU: Um, thanks. I'll put it right here in the change bowl. <clink!>

OK, this is a great question and the answer is the same whether you're a Hog or Hoggette getting the gift you don't like.

First, it depends WHY you don't like it.

If the gift is not your style, this means your partner has misread you. Or... they are trying to CHANGE your style.

In this case say, "Thank you for the gift. This really isn't my style though. It's really nice but I wouldn't wear it. Or use it. Or be seen in public with it. Or stand within 3 miles of it. But thanks!"

I say, be direct and HONEST BUT... appreciative and thankful. Maybe they can exchange the gift for something more to your tastes.

For instance, if it's a sweater you can say, "It's a beautiful sweater, I just don't like this kind of style. You probably know that though since I don't have anything like this in my wardrobe. Maybe that's why you got it? I love you. Now get out to the mall and try again!" hahha

Do you not like the gift because it's totally oblivious? Like, you’ve never mentioned anything about wanting a new video game system because you don't even play video games but your partner totally does... hmm... kinda suspicious!

HIM: But I thought we would play TOGETHER!

YOU: You can go play with yourself!

An oblivious gift is bad because your partner has been totally clueless or selfish. Let 'em know!

HER: Here's your present! Two tickets to the ballet!

YOU: Uh, when have I ever expressed an interest in this?

HER: It cost me a lot of money! And I thought we would spend a wonderful evening together! And you should like it! boo-hooo!

YOU: This gift is something YOU would like to do. Now, I don't mind going with you because I love you but don't call this a gift to me. This would be like if I gave you a gift of football tickets. I don't like the gift. Next time, if you're going to give me a GIFT, please make it something *I* like. Otherwise don't get me a gift at all.

HER: boo-hoo! But I tried really hard!

YOU: No you didn't. You weren't considering my feelings. I'm sure you'll do better next time. Or you can fix it by getting me something I like for my gift and we can use the tickets for a night out.

HER: But I'm crying! You're supposed to cave in and forgive me because you're scared I will withhold sex!

YOU: I forgive you because I love you. You should be scared that *I* will withhold sex from YOU after that selfish act. I trust you will fix this. Now stop trying to manipulate me, you're making it worse.

Yeah, show those BHBs! Big hairy balls!
