Should you take back someone who cheats and, if so, under what circumstance?

The easy answer is... Dump the bum! That no good cheating scum bucket full, uh, scum. Yeah!

Look, sometimes, it's not worth examining further. Because the person is just not WORTH understanding WHY they cheated. In that case, be done with them!

Don't let yourself be treated poorly.

The only people who should be treated poorly, are mosquitoes! Mosquito-people must be crushed! Imagine if there were people who acted like mosquitoes? You're just hanging out enjoying the summer night and WAM! Some strange person runs up to you and BITES YOUR ARM! Waaa! Now you're all itchy!

And they don't even run away! No! They dance around you, taunting you! Your blood all over their mouth like chocolate frosting on the face of a 5 year old birthday boy. Damn mosquito-people!

Ahem.

But let's talk about when life gets more complex.

IF your partner is very important to you -- for instance, you've made a life together -- this could include children together or you're married or you've got a goldfish AND a bonsai tree together... Basically if this person is honestly irreplaceable to you and you WANT to fix things -- only then should you attempt to forgive them.

Why should you EVER forgive a human who cheats on you?

For yourself.

Because you've decided that your relationship makes you happy and that you would rather that your partner apologize and fix things than for you to dump them.

This will not be easy.

Your partner will have to earn back your trust. You will have to ALLOW your partner to earn back your trust.

Ask yourself, is there any way I can move past this IF he is really sorry AND he changes his behavior AND he makes it up to me?

If no, you can't go on. End it.
